Power quality engineering for high-impact metallurgical loads
Steel and metallurgical plants combine electric arc furnaces, rolling mills, large drives, cranes and auxiliary motors on the same network. Rapid reactive power changes, characteristic harmonics and repeated load cycles can reduce power factor, disturb bus voltage and increase stress on transformers, cables and capacitor equipment.
Recommended system configuration
- High-voltage SVG, SVC or MSVC for fast reactive power and voltage support.
- Tuned passive harmonic filters for dominant harmonic orders from furnace and rectifier loads.
- High-voltage capacitor banks for stable base compensation where the harmonic study permits.
- Soft starters or drive coordination for large pumps, fans, mills and conveyors.
Engineering data required
Provide the single-line diagram, transformer and furnace ratings, operating cycle, measured power factor, harmonic spectrum, short-circuit capacity and target limits. CHYN uses these inputs to coordinate filter branches, dynamic capacity, switching logic, protection and cooling.
